United To Roll Out Free In Flight Entertainment Service to iOS Users

March 17, 2014

Got an iOS device? Then the friendly skies are really going to be friendly to you.

Come April, United Airlines will roll out a new in-flight entertainment service that will stream 150 movies and 200 television shows free to passengers’ iOS devices.

United had talked about such a service last month and made the announcement in monthly statements to its frequent flier program members. In fact, the service will be sponsored in part by the MileagePlus Explorer Card.

iOS users will have to download the United app, while laptop users will need a browser plug-in.
The system will be installed on most domestic aircraft by the end of 2014, starting with Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 747-400 and some 777-200 aircraft. It will be rolled out in stages through the end of the year; United didn’t say when, but it will also offer the service to Android and other mobile operating systems as well in the future.
