One airline is painting future travels with a nice shade of green. Engadget reports that easyJet is in the early stages of infusing eco-friendly technology into its airplanes, possibly ushering in the era of green taxiing.

As the report states, the airline is investigating the possibility of using hydrogen fuel cell technology present in some automobile designs and combining it with braking innovations that would give aviation a turn toward more earth friendly means.

The following video explains a bit more on easyJet’s initial throes into what could be game changing advancements.

As you can see from the above, the fuel cell and brake improvements wouldn’t mean a flight free of fuel emissions.

Rather, these giant changes would mean alterations to the modicum of time many of us spend on the tarmac. Instead of expending fuel while taxiing, easyJet is hoping to get out of the gate efficiently and extremely quietly.

The airline’s engineering director Ian Davies expounded on the budding tech, via Engadget: “The hybrid plane concept we are announcing today is both a vision of the future and a challenge to our partners and suppliers to continue to push the boundaries towards reducing our carbon emissions.”

As the report states, the savings could be dramatic: “50,000 tons of fuel a year.” However, the news is far more important than economic savings.

To push Davies point to the next level, this could mean, if successful, a complete overhaul to aviation’s infrastructure, which is perhaps long overdue.
